Sound Transit Reaffirms Commitment to Tacoma Dome Link Extension
Sound Transit recently approved an updated delivery plan for its ST3 expansion program, providing greater clarity on the future of light rail service in Pierce County. While the agency is faced with significant funding challenges across the regional system, the Tacoma Dome 2035 Link Extension remains a committed project and continues to move forward as part of the agency’s long-term expansion plans.
The Tacoma Dome Link Extension will extend regional light rail service south from Federal Way to the Tacoma Dome Station area, creating a direct connection between Pierce County and the broader Link network serving Sea-Tac Airport, Seattle, the Eastside, and Snohomish County. The project is expected to include new stations in South Federal Way, Fife, East Tacoma, and the Tacoma Dome District, improving mobility for residents, workers, and visitors throughout the region.
The Sound Transit Board’s recent action is particularly noteworthy because earlier discussions included potential options that would have delayed portions of the project or terminated the line in Fife. Those alternatives were ultimately not adopted. Instead, the Board reaffirmed Tacoma Dome as the planned southern terminus of the regional light rail system, preserving the long-term vision approved by voters.
While significant design, environmental review, and construction work remains ahead, the current project schedule anticipates completion in the mid-2030s. For Pierce County, the Tacoma Dome Link Extension represents one of the largest transportation investments in local history and is expected to support economic development, increase regional connectivity, expand transportation choices, and create new opportunities for housing and commercial investment near future station areas. TPCAR will continue to monitor project developments and keep members informed as major milestones are reached.
As station area planning continues, REALTORS® should expect increased interest in transit-oriented development opportunities, redevelopment projects, and housing growth within key corridors serving the future light rail system.
